Hurricane season prep: inspecting your pool screen enclosure in Volusia County

Living in Central Florida is a dream. You can spend the morning walking the Spring-to-Spring Trail or watching manatees at Blue Spring State Park in Orange City. But, as we all know, Florida has two seasons: "pretty nice outside" and "a lizard just stared at you from your lanai like you owe him rent."

Jokes aside, we know the real challenge is hurricane season. Being a 4th-generation, neurodivergent family, my brain loves to focus on the details that others might miss. I’m David, the owner of DeBary Screen Repair by David. Being a 100% disabled veteran-owned business (License #L23000258525), I take pride in doing things the right way. I don't just fix screens; I make sure your home is ready for whatever the wind brings.

Why your pool cage needs a checkup

Think of your pool cage like a big sail on a boat. When the wind hits it, the screen acts like a net. If the screen is old, brittle, or torn, the wind puts too much stress on the metal frame. This can cause the whole structure to fail during a big storm.

You want to catch these issues before the weather gets wild. Whether you live near the DeBary Hall Historic Site or out by the St. Johns River, the wind can be unpredictable.

How to inspect your enclosure

You don’t need to be an expert to see if your screens need help. Here is what I look for when I walk around a property:

  • Look for holes: Even a small hole can grow into a big tear during a storm. If a lizard can get in, a gust of wind can rip that screen right out.
  • Check the "spline": The spline is the rubber cord that holds the screen in the frame. If it’s popping out, your screen isn't secure.
  • Watch for rust: Check the metal frame near the ground. Florida’s humidity is tough on metal. If the screws are rusted, they might not hold the frame steady during a blow.
  • Wiggle the frame: Gently push on the screen panels. If they feel loose, call a pro.

Keeping our neighbors safe

I’ve lived in Volusia County my whole life. I’ve seen the damage that storms can do near New Smyrna Beach and all the way out to DeLand’s Artisan Alley. My goal is to make sure your screen isn't the thing that ends up in your neighbor's yard during a hurricane.

I’m the guy who notices the tiny things—like one loose screw or a screen that looks a little too stretched. Because my brain works a bit differently, I treat every screen job like it’s my own home. I want it perfect.

My simple price list

I believe in being honest and open about money. You shouldn't have to guess what a repair will cost. Here is my current pricing:

  • Pool cage wall panels: $65 each
  • Roof panels: $130 each
  • Lanai, porch, or window panels: $75 each
  • Service call minimum: $130

Whether you are closer to the SunRail station in DeBary, the Sanford Historic District, or over by the Deltona Walmart on Howland Blvd, I come to you. I love driving through our beautiful county and helping folks keep their outdoor spaces clean and safe.

Don't wait for the clouds to roll in

Don’t wait until the news tells us a storm is coming. By then, everyone is calling for repairs. Get ahead of the crowd! It feels so much better to sit on your porch, look out at the trees near Gemini Springs, and know that your screen enclosure is tight and ready.

Whether you live in the DeBary Farmhouse Inn area or anywhere else in Volusia County, I am here to help. I’m honest, I’m thorough, and I genuinely love fixing screens. It’s what I do best.
